Refined German Workhorse • Clean Bitterness, Noble Finish • Minty-Spice Signature
Perle is a modern German classic, bred from Northern Brewer to combine dependable bittering power with an aroma refined enough to finish traditional lagers. It is prized by German brewers as a true do-everything hop — clean and efficient early in the boil, pleasantly spicy and subtly minty late.
With an alpha acid content of 8%, Perle delivers roughly twice the bittering efficiency of the classic noble varieties while keeping the same smooth, low-cohumulone character that never turns harsh in a delicate lager.
Used early, Perle reads as simply clean. Shifted into the final 15 minutes, its spicy-minty-floral character comes through clearly while staying well inside noble-hop restraint.
Perle is a staple ingredient in many German and continental styles, including:
It is also a smart single-hop choice for lagers, covering bittering and aroma duties without needing a second variety.
For a 5 gallon batch, use 0.75–1.25 oz at 60 minutes for a clean bittering base, plus 0.5–1 oz in the last 10–15 minutes for spice and gentle mint. Kept to bittering, it stays nearly invisible; finished late, it lends classic German hop character with a touch more presence than Hallertau.
Perle pairs seamlessly with Hallertau Mittelfrüh or Tettnang — bitter with Perle, finish noble, and you have the backbone of countless commercial German lagers.
Whether you're crafting an everyday Helles, a copper altbier, or a single-hop German Pilsner, Perle provides the clean efficiency and refined spice that make it Germany's favorite workhorse.
